NCERT textbooks updated to mirror evolving Indian political realities
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has made significant changes to its Social Science curriculum for the academic year 2024–25. These changes reflect the evolving political landscape in India and aim to provide students with updated and accurate information. The NCERT frequently reviews and updates its textbooks to incorporate unused improvements and viewpoints.

One key correction made by the NCERT is the inclusion of references to the revocation of Article 370 in Chapter 7 of the Political Science textbook for Lesson 12. This change, made in August 2019, reflects the government’s position on Jammu and Kashmir and ensures students have accurate and politically impartial data about the region.
The NCERT has also amended the definition of the Left in Chapter 3 to provide a clearer understanding of its ideological position. The revised definition emphasizes state control of the economy and support for state direction over free competition, preparing students with a deeper understanding of political ideologies.
In addition to these revisions, the NCERT has made changes to the content of its Course 10 Social Science course reading. References to certain political parties, such as the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), have been removed from the course. Instead, content related to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the National People’s Party (NPP) has been included, reflecting their recognition as national parties.
These changes aim to improve the relevance and quality of the course readings and provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Indian legislative issues and society. By incorporating references to later political developments, updating words, and changing definitions, the NCERT ensures that students are equipped with the necessary knowledge to navigate the complex world of Indian legislative issues and society.
