Indian Box Office Collections Witness 15% Decline in First Half of 2023
The Indian box office collections for film releases in the first half of 2023 have experienced a significant decline, dropping below ₹5,000 crore. According to a report by media consulting firm Ormax, the gross collections for this period amounted to ₹4,868 crore, marking a 15% decrease compared to the previous year. Among the top-grossing films, “Pathaan” led the pack, contributing over 13% of the overall collections with an impressive ₹646 crore. The share of Bollywood films saw an increase, rising to 37% from 33% in 2022, while the share of Kannada language films dropped significantly from 8% to just 2%. In 2022, south Indian languages had dominated the box office with a combined language share of 50%, but in 2023, their share decreased to 44% due to a sharp decline in Kannada films’ contribution.
