Delhi Remains Most Polluted National Capital in the World for Sixth Consecutive Year

Image
Delhi has once again topped the list of the world’s most polluted national capitals, marking the sixth consecutive year of severe air quality concerns. According to the latest report by IQAir, the city’s average annual PM2.5 concentration remains far above the safe limits set by the World Health Organization (WHO). The primary causes of Delhi’s pollution include vehicular emissions, industrial activities, construction dust, and seasonal stubble burning in neighboring states. During winter, a thick layer of smog often blankets the city, worsening health conditions and leading to respiratory illnesses among residents. Despite various government measures such as odd-even vehicle schemes, pollution control campaigns, and restrictions on construction activities, air quality continues to deteriorate. Experts emphasize the urgent need for long-term solutions, including stricter industrial regulations, increased green cover, and improved public transportation systems. With pollution leve...

"Delhi's Persistent Fog and Air Pollution Disrupting Daily Life: A Call for Urgent Action"

Image
The persistence of dense fog in Delhi, coupled with the worsening air quality, continues to disrupt daily life and essential services. The capital's air quality index (AQI) touching 350, categorizing it as "very poor," is a stark reminder of the growing environmental challenges.  With visibility reduced to zero at the Indira Gandhi International Airport and 50 meters at Safdarjung, the fog not only delayed air travel but also affected rail transport, with numerous trains running behind schedule. While authorities managed to avoid major disruptions at the airport, 306 flight delays with an average of 18 minutes highlight the severity of the situation. This ongoing problem, compounded by the low temperatures, demands immediate attention. The fact that the temperature remains largely unchanged while the AQI deteriorates, signals a failure in addressing the root causes of pollution, such as vehicular emissions, industrial output, and construction activity.  Read more: ...

Is Delhi’s Odd-Even Rule Really Effective To Clear The Air?

Image
Delhi’s air quality has been consistently poor, prompting the government to reintroduce the odd-even plan to tackle pollution. While this approach may reduce some emissions, studies show mixed results. PM2.5 particles decreased, but other research suggests people found alternative transportation methods, minimizing the overall impact. The odd-even rule appears to help with gaseous pollutants like nitrogen dioxide, yet a comprehensive, inclusive strategy is crucial for lasting improvement. Despite efforts like the odd-even plan, Delhi needs a more comprehensive, long-term solution to combat  air pollution . The current approach, primarily focused on private vehicles, may not be enough. A broader initiative involving government officials, political events, and rallies is essential to ensure everyone contributes to the cause. Real change requires a collective effort, extending beyond the common citizens following traffic restrictions. In the quest for clean air, Delhi must look...

Diwali Celebrations Raise Air Quality Concerns in Delhi

Image
As India celebrated Dussehra with enthusiasm, a gloomy cloud cast a shadow over Delhi, highlighting the pressing issue of deteriorating air quality during the festival season. Traditionally,  Diwali festivities  involve burning effigies of Ravana and setting off firecrackers, contributing to air pollution. This year, the celebrations have coincided with a spike in concerns over Delhi’s air quality. Punjab witnessed a surge in agricultural residue burning, with 360 field fires reported in a single day, bringing the season’s total to 2,306. This alarming increase adds to Delhi’s air quality woes, which have remained in the “poor category” for three consecutive days. The Air Quality Index (AQI) value of 238 on Tuesday morning indicated a worsening situation. The stark contrast in the treatment of stubble burning, punishable for farmers, and the leniency towards firecrackers and Ravana effigies raises questions about environmental responsibility. While Delhi grapples with e...
