Women Empowerment: From Triple Talaq Ban To Women’s Reservation Bill

In a historic move towards  gender equality , the Indian government has introduced the Women’s Reservation Bill, aiming to reserve 33% of seats in both the Lok Sabha (India’s lower house of Parliament) and state legislative assemblies for women. This proposed legislation seeks to tackle the persistent issue of women’s underrepresentation in Indian politics, providing them with a fair chance to hold crucial decision-making positions. The bill, which has been in the making for decades, was recently passed by the Lok Sabha during a special session celebrating India’s 75th anniversary of independence, receiving overwhelming support with 454 votes in favor and only two against. The Modi government’s commitment to  women’s  empowerment is evident through various initiatives, including schemes such as “Beti Bachao” (Save the Girl Child), “Ujjwala Yojna” (providing LPG connections to women), and the promotion of women’s ownership of houses under the PM Awas Yojna.
