WPL 2023: Cricket Women’s Premier League Begins Today
Interestingly today’s opening teams ‘Gujarat Giants’ and ‘Mumbai Indians’ are owned by the Adani Group and Mukesh Ambani respectively. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced its plans to organize a women’s IPL-style tournament by 2023 around this time last year. The then-president and secretary of the board, Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah showed an interest in establishing the league as soon as possible after learning that there was a sizable market for women’s cricket on the Indian subcontinent. With each victory on the playing field—the national women’s team won the Asia Cup, came in second at the Commonwealth Games and captured the ODI series in England—the demand for it increased.
