7 interesting things you must know about India’s new Parliament

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated India’s new Parliament building as part of the Central Vista project, designed by architect Bimal Patel. Construction began in 2019, and the building showcases a blend of ancient and modern elements. The triangular shape of the structure not only reflects the plot of land but also pays homage to sacred geometry in various religions. The new Parliament and the old one are expected to function as a single complex, with complementary designs and materials.

The new Parliament building incorporates green construction techniques, aiming to reduce electricity consumption by 30% compared to its predecessor. It has been constructed to withstand seismic activity as Delhi falls under seismic zone V. Materials for the building were sourced from different parts of the country, including granite from Lakha Village and sandstone from Sarmathura. Craftsmen from Mumbai contributed to the wooden architecture design, using wood sourced from Nagpur. While the final cost of the project is yet to be announced, the initial contract was awarded to Tata Projects for Rs 861.9 crore, which later escalated to Rs 971 crore. Government officials now estimate the cost to be around Rs 1,200 crore.

The new Parliament’s focus on environmental sustainability is evident through the digitization of records and the implementation of tablets and iPads. This shift towards an eco-friendly approach aligns with the evolving practices of the new Parliament, emphasizing technological advancements and efficient resource utilization. The grand inauguration of the new Parliament building marks a significant milestone in India’s architectural and democratic journey, symbolizing the nation’s commitment to a modern and sustainable future.
