Modi becomes first Indian PM to visit Greece in 40 years
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Athens, following his participation in the three-day BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, on an invitation from Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. This visit holds significance as it’s the first Greek visit by an Indian prime minister in forty years. During his stay, Modi is expected to focus on critical matters such as defense cooperation, trade and investment, migration, and shipping. The agenda comprises discussions with Mitsotakis, interactions with the Indian community, meetings with business leaders, and a hosted business lunch.
The visit underscores the intention to deepen ties between India and Greece, exploring cooperation in trade, investments, defense, and maritime transport. These areas of collaboration have fortified the relationship between the two countries in recent times. Greece has expressed its desire to position itself as a gateway to Europe for India, aiming to further strengthen their partnership.
Dimitrios Ioannou, the Greek Ambassador to India, highlighted the potential for enhancing their enduring friendship and commended India’s achievement in the Chandrayaan-3 mission, which marked the country’s successful soft landing on the lunar surface, a remarkable feat in space exploration.
