Women Empowerment: From Triple Talaq Ban To Women’s Reservation Bill
In a historic move towards gender equality, the Indian government has introduced the Women’s Reservation Bill, aiming to reserve 33% of seats in both the Lok Sabha (India’s lower house of Parliament) and state legislative assemblies for women. This proposed legislation seeks to tackle the persistent issue of women’s underrepresentation in Indian politics, providing them with a fair chance to hold crucial decision-making positions. The bill, which has been in the making for decades, was recently passed by the Lok Sabha during a special session celebrating India’s 75th anniversary of independence, receiving overwhelming support with 454 votes in favor and only two against.
The Modi government’s commitment to women’s empowerment is evident through various initiatives, including schemes such as “Beti Bachao” (Save the Girl Child), “Ujjwala Yojna” (providing LPG connections to women), and the promotion of women’s ownership of houses under the PM Awas Yojna. The government has also abolished the practice of triple talaq among Muslim communities, increased financial inclusion, and extended collateral-free MUDRA loans to empower women economically.
Renowned personalities from different fields, including actresses Kangana Ranaut and Esha Gupta, have expressed their support for the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament. They commend Prime Minister Modi’s dedication to women’s empowerment and underscore the bill’s significance in advancing women’s rights across the nation. This historic moment signifies a major step forward in India’s journey towards gender equality and increased women’s participation in decision-making processes.
