Skyroot Aerospace to Launch Maiden Rocket, Vikram-1
Hyderabad-based startup Skyroot Aerospace is poised to make a significant mark in the Indian space industry with the upcoming launch of its first rocket, Vikram-1, scheduled for early 2024. The rocket has a payload capacity of up to 300 kg, making it capable of deploying satellites into a lower Earth orbit.
Vikram-1’s structure is entirely crafted from lightweight and robust carbon fiber, and its engines are 3D-printed, showcasing Skyroot Aerospace’s commitment to advanced technology for building reliable and affordable rockets. While the initial flight will incorporate some commercial aspects, the company anticipates its full-fledged commercial operations to commence after additional test flights over the next one and a half years.
Founded in 2018 by two former scientists from ISRO, India’s space agency, Skyroot Aerospace has garnered significant funding, amounting to 526 crore rupees. The startup recently inaugurated a expansive facility spanning 60,000 square feet near the RG International Airport in Hyderabad, capable of accommodating around 300 personnel. This facility stands as the largest private rocket manufacturing facility in India, signaling the growth and potential for substantial investment in the country’s space sector.
As India’s space industry evolves, experts foresee its value reaching $40 billion by 2040. Skyroot Aerospace’s mission to provide cost-effective and reliable rockets contributes significantly to this growth trajectory, with the potential to inspire a new generation of space technology enthusiasts in India.
