Atal Setu: ₹18,000 Crore Worth India’s Longest Sea Bridge Opens Today

India’s Atal Setu, the 22-kilometer long sea bridge, is set to open on January 12. Named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the bridge connects Mumbai’s Sewri to Nhava Sheva. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has referred to it as the ‘Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu’ or the ‘Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL).’

Vajpayee was the first Prime Minister of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and led the country three times. His birthday, December 25, is celebrated as ‘Good Governance Day’. The Atal Setu is built with a lot of materials, using more steel than the 17 Eiffel Tower and more concrete than the 6 Statues of Liberty. It has six lanes and reduces travel time between Navi Mumbai and Mumbai from two hours to just 20 minutes.

The bridge is an example of smart and eco-friendly construction, featuring special decks, marine life protection systems, and an earthquake-resistant feature. The Atal Setu is expected to improve connectivity between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai airports, leading to increased tourism, a better economy, and job creation.
