How will PM Modi’s Moscow visit address both bilateral ties and international issues?

Today, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is flying to Moscow, Russia, for a crucial two-day visit. This visit holds significant importance as it is the first time an Indian Prime Minister has traveled to Russia since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow has termed a “special military operation.” Indian Ambassador to Russia Vinay Kumar has emphasized the significance of this visit, calling it a key opportunity for both leaders to strengthen bilateral ties and discuss regional and international issues.

During his visit, PM Modi will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin for a working lunch, where they are expected to exchange ideas on enhancing trade, cooperation, and addressing global challenges. The visit marks the first trip to Russia by an Indian Prime Minister in three years, breaking a tradition of annual meetings and summits. Modi’s last official visit to Russia was in 2019.

Ambassador Vinay Kumar highlighted that this visit is pivotal as it comes at a time when Russia has become a major source of energy resources for India and trade relations have expanded into new areas. The discussions are anticipated to cover a broad range of topics, from bilateral economic relations to broader global issues, reflecting the evolving dynamics between the two nations.

In addition to his meeting with President Putin, PM Modi will also engage with the Indian community in Russia on Tuesday. He will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Kremlin and visit an exhibition venue in Moscow. Although the detailed agenda of the talks remains undisclosed, the visit is expected to address both the deepening of bilateral relations and significant international concerns.

The visit underscores the continuing strength of the relationship between India and Russia, both of which are prominent members of the BRICS group. While India has not condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine, it has consistently advocated for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.

This visit is a testament to the strategic partnership between India and Russia and highlights the importance of diplomatic engagements in navigating complex global issues.
