 India, during its G20 presidency, has made it a priority to be the voice of the Global South, representing developing nations across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stressed the importance of consulting with both G20 partners and fellow Global South nations to ensure their concerns and unique perspectives are heard on the international stage. Since taking over the G20 presidency in December 2022, India has actively raised Global South issues at international forums and United Nations meetings, striving to address the specific needs of developing nations and provide them with a platform to influence the G20 agenda.

India’s commitment to the Global South is evident through its actions, such as sending Made-in-India vaccines to around 100 countries during the Covid-19 pandemic and exporting medicines to approximately 150 nations. Furthermore, India hosted the Voice of Global South Summit, virtually convening representatives from 125 countries, and highlighted the region’s concerns at the G7 Summit in Hiroshima. Prime Minister Modi presided over these events, demonstrating India’s dedication to building a prosperous and inclusive future for the world that takes into account the Global South’s needs and priorities.

India’s advocacy for the Global South is multifaceted, including efforts to include the African Union as a full member of the G20. Additionally, Prime Minister Modi has emphasized that the Global South represents shared history in their struggle against colonialism and apartheid, shaping their modern relations. India’s collaboration with the South Centre on international taxation and capacity building further underscores its commitment to voicing the concerns of the Global South on crucial international issues, particularly in the realm of taxation.
