Indian Box Office Collections Witness 15% Decline in First Half of 2023
The Indian box office collections for film releases in the first half of 2023 have experienced a significant decline, dropping below ₹5,000 crore. According to a report by media consulting firm Ormax, the gross collections for this period amounted to ₹4,868 crore, marking a 15% decrease compared to the previous year. Among the top-grossing films, “Pathaan” led the pack, contributing over 13% of the overall collections with an impressive ₹646 crore.

The share of Bollywood films saw an increase, rising to 37% from 33% in 2022, while the share of Kannada language films dropped significantly from 8% to just 2%. In 2022, south Indian languages had dominated the box office with a combined language share of 50%, but in 2023, their share decreased to 44% due to a sharp decline in Kannada films’ contribution.
Despite the decline in the first half, there is hope for improvement in the second half of 2023. Upcoming films like “Jawan,” “Salaar,” and “Tiger 3” are expected to perform well and potentially boost the overall box office earnings for the year. While the year may end with lower collections than 2022, the second half releases could bridge the gap and may even surpass the previous year’s box office. Indian film enthusiasts eagerly await the high-rated films’ releases to see how the year’s box office collections will ultimately fare.
