Karnataka Govt Plans To Launch State-Owned Airline
The Karnataka government is exploring the idea of launching its own airline to bolster regional connectivity within the state. This initiative, led by Karnataka Minister for Large and Medium Industries & Infrastructure Development, M.B. Patil, signifies a shift in the management of airports within the state. Previously under the authority of the airport authority, the state government now aims to manage all future airports, with the Shivamogga airport already under their control. The proposed state-owned airline aims to stimulate economic growth in several districts and complement the ongoing construction of the Vijayapur Airport, scheduled for inauguration by April 2024.

In addition to the aviation venture, the Karnataka government is pursuing various infrastructure and development projects. Plans include establishing an expansive eco-tourism park, an Aero City ‘Business Park’ near Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, and the Bengaluru Suburban Project. The latter, covering 149 km in its first phase and slated for expansion to 452 km in its second phase, promises significant improvements in connectivity and mobility. Furthermore, the government envisions a ‘Knowledge-Health-Innovation and Research City’ on the outskirts of Bengaluru, encompassing world-class educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and research centers across 2,000 acres. These projects collectively aim to boost tourism, support local economies, generate employment opportunities, and enhance the state’s infrastructure.
To facilitate air connectivity between cities within Karnataka, the government is in discussions with civil aviation experts, assessing the feasibility of establishing its own airline. Financial modalities, including leasing aircraft, are under consideration, with an estimated cost of ₹600 crore for three new aircraft. Collaboration discussions with businessman Sanjay Ghodawat, owner of Star Air, are also underway. This initiative holds the promise of improved air services connecting various cities within the state, benefiting regions like Mysore, Bengaluru, Kalaburagi, Hubballi, and Shivamogga.
