Pay for Tweets? Elon Musk Mulls Subscription Fees for X (Twitter) Users

Elon Musk, the owner of the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter), is contemplating a significant change for the social media giant. He has suggested putting X behind a paywall, requiring all users to subscribe. The motivation behind this move is to address the pervasive issue of automated accounts, or bots, that spread misinformation on the platform. Musk believes that implementing a small monthly fee for users could increase operating costs for bots and reduce their usage, making the platform safer and more reliable.

While Musk has not disclosed the exact subscription fee, he has emphasized that it will be a nominal amount. This announcement follows Musk’s previous decision to replace Twitter’s blue tick verification system with a payment model, offering users various benefits. X (Twitter) has already introduced premium subscription plans, initially known as ‘Twitter Blue’ and later renamed ‘X Premium,’ which cost users $8 per month and offer features like checkmarks (badges), post editing, and ranking prioritization. While some users are unhappy with these changes, experts are divided on whether this move will significantly affect X’s user base, given Twitter’s resilience in the face of previous alternatives. However, there are rumors that the platform still struggles to generate enough revenue, leading Musk to explore additional paid models to secure its financial future.
