Google's 'Ask if Urgent' Feature Rolls Out on Pixel Phones
Google is introducing a new feature to enhance its Call Screen service on Pixel phones. While the service was effective in blocking calls from unknown or spam numbers, it fell short when dealing with calls from known contacts. The new feature, called “Ask if urgent,” addresses this limitation.
This option appears when receiving a call from someone in the user’s contact list. It allows users to instruct Google Assistant to pick up and inquire if the call is urgent. This empowers individuals to make informed decisions on whether to take the call immediately or return it later.
The “Ask if urgent” feature is currently rolling out in the US and several other countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Spain, and the UK. However, the feature is automatic in the US, while users in other countries need to manually choose to screen the call.
This feature aims to provide users with greater control over their calls, especially in situations where they may be occupied but do not want to miss an important call. It functions as a screening mechanism, helping individuals manage their time efficiently.
Additionally, Google has addressed an issue with its Personal Safety app to mitigate false emergency calls. Previously, Android phones were making unintended emergency calls to 911 in the US or 100 in India due to the default activation of the emergency SOS feature. Google’s update in June 2023 requires users to hold a button on the screen for 3 seconds after pressing the power button five times to make an emergency call. While this step reduces false calls, it raises concerns about potential delays in urgent situations where every second matters, presenting a trade-off in resolving one issue while potentially exacerbating another.
