India Unleashes Cyber Commandos Nationwide to Combat Rising Cyber Threats

India is taking significant steps to bolster its cybersecurity efforts by forming a specialized team of ‘cyber commandos.’ This initiative, proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and overseen by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), aims to deploy these digital defenders in every district across the country. Comprising police officers from various states and territories, as well as central police organizations, these cyber commandos will focus on countering cyber threats, defending information technology networks, and investigating cybercrimes. The MHA has urged police forces to identify and nominate at least 10 candidates with basic knowledge of computer networks and operating systems to join this crucial cybersecurity initiative.

The newly established cyber commando team will undergo comprehensive training provided by the Ministry of Home Affairs and other top institutions. Equipped with the necessary tools, these commandos will continue working for their respective parent organizations, being called upon for national duties only in urgent cases. With a specific focus on protecting India from the escalating cyber threats it faces, the cyber commandos will play a vital role in securing the nation’s critical infrastructure, such as power grids and financial systems. This proactive approach is particularly crucial as India ranked as the third most attacked country globally in 2022, with over 1.3 billion detected cyber attacks, mainly originating from countries like China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

In the face of increasing cyber threats globally and the recognition of India as a growing international power, the formation of the cyber commando team underscores the nation’s commitment to cybersecurity. As cyber attacks continue to pose risks to various sectors, including space research, the cyber commandos will serve as specialized forces capable of addressing sophisticated threats and ensuring the security of the country’s digital landscape.
