User-Friendly Podcasts: YouTube Music Debuts Auto-Download Feature on Global Stage
YouTube Music has introduced a new auto-download feature for podcasts, following the discontinuation of Google’s Podcast app. Users can activate this feature by navigating to the show page, tapping on settings, selecting “Save to library,” and enabling auto-downloads. However, it remains unclear whether the app automatically deletes episodes after listening, a feature present in the now-retired Google Podcasts app. The transition to YouTube Music as the primary podcast platform may pose challenges for some users, but the company is working on simplifying the user experience with upcoming updates.

The auto-download feature, available on version 6.21 for both Android and iOS, is a welcomed addition for podcast enthusiasts. Its convenience eliminates the need for manual episode downloads. Yet, there’s a need for clarification on whether the app removes episodes after they’ve been listened to, a detail that users hope the platform will address or enhance in the future. Despite missing the auto-delete option, YouTube Music is positioning itself as a strong contender in the podcast space, competing with platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music.
YouTube Music’s podcast dominance reflects Google’s strategic shift, with the app becoming the exclusive host for podcasts. The transition might be a bit less convenient than the previous Google Podcasts app, especially in terms of episode management. As the platform evolves, users anticipate further enhancements to streamline features and maintain YouTube Music’s position as a preferred podcast hub. Additionally, YouTube’s overall popularity in India, with its short-video-making app Shorts gaining traction, highlights the platform’s influence in the country.
