Air India Expands Global Reach with New Mumbai to Melbourne Direct Flights

Air India is set to enhance its global connectivity by introducing direct flights from Mumbai to Melbourne starting December 15. While Air India currently operates daily flights from Delhi to Melbourne and Sydney, the addition of the Mumbai-Melbourne route, with flights three times a week, will contribute nearly 40,000 additional seats annually, catering to the growing demand for travel to Victoria, Australia.

Victoria, home to a significant Indian community, will benefit from increased accessibility, especially considering that approximately 40 percent of all Indians in Australia reside in this region. The primary focus of this new route is to meet the increasing travel needs of individuals visiting friends and family, as well as those traveling for business or leisure.

Nipun Aggarwal, a key figure at Air India, expressed enthusiasm about this new route, emphasizing its alignment with Air India’s broader plans to establish direct flights connecting India with more destinations globally. The selected aircraft for this route is the Boeing 787–8 Dreamliner, featuring 18 flat beds in the business class and 238 regular seats in the economy class.

With convenient connections from 17 different Indian cities, travelers can easily reach Melbourne with just one additional stop in either Delhi or Mumbai. Australia’s positive response is evident, with Natalie Hutchins, a minister in Victoria’s government, highlighting the positive impact on tourism, job creation, and the facilitation of business connections between Victoria and India — one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.

In summary, Air India’s new direct flight from Mumbai to Melbourne, commencing on December 15, is expected to enhance travel options for various purposes, supported by the efficient Boeing 787–8 Dreamliner. The flights will operate three times a week, contributing to increased connectivity and strengthening ties between India and Australia.
