Apple Chooses India for iPhone 17 Production Ahead of China

Apple is making a surprising move by choosing India as the launchpad for manufacturing its latest gadget, the iPhone 17, even before commencing production in China. This decision marks a significant departure from Apple’s traditional approach, where China has been the primary location for the initial production of new iPhones. The plan is set to be implemented in the second half of 2025, signifying India’s growing importance for Apple, not just as a market but also as a manufacturing hub.

Several factors contribute to Apple’s preference for India over China. India is rapidly emerging as a hub for technology and manufacturing, presenting an opportunity for Apple to diversify and reduce reliance on China amidst trade tensions and other challenges. Manufacturing iPhones in India also enables Apple to establish closer proximity to the Indian customer base, a substantial market for the company.

Apple’s positive relationship with the Indian government is evident through its collaboration with Tata for iPhone assembly. This strategic partnership not only showcases Apple’s trust in India but also facilitates smoother interactions with the government and enhances customer relations.

As of 2023, 12 to 14 percent of globally sold iPhones are manufactured in India, a notable share. However, projections suggest a significant increase to 20 to 25 percent by 2024, underscoring Apple’s substantial commitment to the Indian market.

Simultaneously, Foxconn, a key iPhone manufacturer for Apple, is shifting its focus towards India, with a decline in iPhone production in China. Apple’s decision to produce the iPhone 17 in India represents more than just a manufacturing shift; it signals Apple’s strategic investment in India, strengthened ties with the government, and recognition of the immense potential within the Indian market.
