BAPS Hindu Mandir: Abu Dhabi To Open 1st Hindu Temple, PM Modi To Inaugurate

Abu Dhabi’s first Hindu Temple, the BAPS Hindu Mandir, is set to open on February 14, 2024, marking the UAE’s commitment to diversity. The temple was inspired by Pramukh Swami Maharaj in 1997 and was gifted to the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in 2015. The foundation was laid on April 20, 2019, and it is 108 feet high, 262 feet long, and 180 feet wide. It features seven towers representing the seven emirates in the United Arab Emirates, each with a narrative from the Shiva Purana, Ramayana, Mahabharata, or Bhagavad Gita. The temple also features detailed carvings and a ‘Dome of Harmony’ symbolizing the five natural elements, earth, water, fire, air, and space, as per Sanatan Hindu Dharma.

The temple uses advanced sensor technology, with over 350 sensors throughout the building, collecting important information about earthquakes, temperature changes, and pressure changes. It offers various facilities for devotees and visitors, including a visitor center, prayer halls, exhibitions, a kids’ sports area, gardens, water features, a food court, and a shop. The temple is eco-friendly, with benches made from recycled wood and a waterfall representing three holy rivers of India — Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati.

Built with pink sandstone and white marble from Rajasthan and Italy, the temple cost Dh400 million and is expected to draw millions of visitors, enhancing India-UAE relations and cultural appreciation. The grand opening on February 14, 2024, will feature rituals, prayers, chants, music, cultural performances, and talks. The public can visit from February 18, 2024, but UAE residents are advised to come from March 1, 2024 due to special events.

The significance of the BAPS Hindu Mandir lies in its ability to teach people about and practice the teachings of Hinduism, such as kindness and respect for living things. The temple will also help improve the relationship between India and the UAE, helping people understand each other’s cultures and values.
