Alarming Rise in Colon Cancer Among Youth: Symptoms and Risk Factors

Colon cancer, a type of cancer that affects the large intestine or rectum, is now affecting younger populations, raising concerns among medical professionals. A recent study by the Delhi State Cancer Institute (DSCI) found that the incidence of colon cancer is shifting towards younger adults aged 31 to 40 years, in contrast to its previous prevalence primarily among individuals over 50. This alarming trend is attributed to the adoption of unhealthy lifestyle habits by younger generations, such as obesity, physical inactivity, and smoking.

An unhealthy diet, high in processed meats and fats, and low in fruits and vegetables, can lead to the development of colorectal cancer at an early age. Studies have shown that diet, obesity, and some drugs can change gut bacteria, leading to inflammation, which can help cancer grow. Subtle symptoms and risk factors include persistent changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain or cramping, unexplained weight loss, and blood in the stool.

Inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, genetic predisposition, alcohol consumption, diabetes, and environmental factors such as exposure to toxins or pollution may also contribute to the development of colorectal cancer in younger individuals. Prevention and early detection are crucial for fighting colon cancer, with experts emphasizing the importance of regular screenings and encouraging lifestyle modifications. Dr. Amruth Raj emphasizes the need to eat a nutritious diet, exercise regularly, and avoid processed foods to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer in young people. Addressing this issue proactively can collectively work towards preventing and combating this potentially life-threatening disease.
