What Lifestyle Habits Increase Cancer Risk in Women? Expert Advice

Cancer is a rapidly increasing global health issue, with over 14 lakh new cases reported in India in 2022, leading to over 9 lakh deaths. Women are at a higher risk of developing various types of cancer, including breast, cervical, ovarian, mouth, and colorectal cancer. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that 30–40% of cancer cases can be prevented through healthy lifestyle changes. Common unhealthy habits that increase cancer risk in women include smoking, obesity, skipping screenings and check-ups, and lack of exercise.

Dr. Surender Kumar Dabas, Vice Chairman & Head of Oncology at BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, recommends maintaining a healthy weight, eating a nutritious diet, exercising regularly, avoiding tobacco and alcohol, preventing sexually transmitted infections, managing stress, and getting vaccinated for cancer-causing viruses.

Understanding the multiple factors behind cancer is crucial, as poor food choices, unbalanced lifestyles, work stress, and smoking are major contributors to cancer risk. By recognizing cancer’s complex causes and actively making lifestyle improvements, women can significantly reduce their chances of developing various cancers. Adopting healthy habits like a balanced diet, regular exercise, avoiding tobacco/alcohol, and routine screenings can enable women to take charge of their well-being for a healthier future.
