Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy’s Luxurious New Residence Sparks Controversy

Former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy has constructed a new residence for the CM, which is nothing short of a luxurious palace. Located on Rushikonda Hill in Visakhapatnam, this sea-facing property initially began as a tourism project and was formerly Jagan Mohan Reddy’s office. The palace, costing Rs. 500 crores, boasts lavish amenities such as 10–12 lakh commodes, 40 lakh bathtubs, and 2 lakh chandeliers.

The expenses for this grand project include a 4-tonne castle air conditioning unit for 1 lakh, Rs. 33 crores on interior decoration, and Rs. 50 crores on landscaping the 9-acre property. The entire complex spans a total area of 1,41,433 square meters and includes 12 bedrooms, each equipped with central air conditioning and spa facilities. Additional highlights feature a sea-facing dining hall, deluxe suites, banquet halls, restaurants, and lounges spread across seven building blocks.

However, the construction of this opulent residence has sparked significant political controversy. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has accused the former YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSRCP government of secretly constructing this luxurious hilltop palace behind large barricades. The TDP claims that the property, intended as a camp office for Jagan Reddy who had declared Vizag the capital of Andhra Pradesh, involved the destruction of Rushikonda Hill to build three palaces. They allege that the Jagan government has already spent Rs. 407 crore out of the estimated Rs. 452 crore on the project. Nara Lokesh, an Andhra Minister, and Y S Sharmila, Jagan’s sister, have demanded an investigation into the spending, accusing Jagan of misusing public funds. Amidst this political conflict, the keys to the palace remain with the TDP, casting uncertainty over the future of the residence and Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Political reactions have been intense. TDP MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao has targeted Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, drawing attention to Rushikonda Hill, which was projected as a tourism spot. On Sunday, TDP’s Bheemili MLA, along with members of the Jana Sena Party, entered the site, reiterating claims that a 61-acre resort being developed there by the YSRCP is actually for a “CM residence” for Jagan. The ruling party insiders have stated that the issue is being used to highlight Jagan’s alleged misgovernance to the public. TDP leaders have accused Jagan of using the Praja Vedika initiative and his capital declaration to benefit his allies who have bought land in Visakhapatnam.

In response, the YSRCP has accused the TDP of pursuing a political agenda and attempting to discredit the opposition with baseless charges. A close source of former minister Gudivada Amarnath, who lost from the nearby Anakapalli Assembly seat, reacted by saying, “They are trying to exploit the capital issue for their benefit, but we are ready for the challenge.”

As this political drama unfolds, the future of the opulent CM residence and Jagan Mohan Reddy’s political career remains uncertain.
