UAE Joins BRICS: Strengthening Global Ties and Economic Growth
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has taken a significant step toward enhancing its economic and diplomatic influence by joining BRICS, a coalition of emerging economies that now includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, as well as newer members like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, and the UAE itself. Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri, the UAE’s minister of economy, has underscored the profound impact this membership has on the nation’s economic trajectory and global partnerships.
Speaking to Nikkei Asia, Al Marri articulated how BRICS membership bolsters the UAE’s economic position by facilitating closer ties with major global players such as China and India. “The UAE has always been a place where the economy has built on the strengths and ties of major economies. The inclusion in BRICS brings the UAE strength, as well as ties with major economies such as China, India,” he remarked. His statement reflects the UAE’s longstanding strategy of leveraging its unique position as a global economic hub to foster mutually beneficial relationships with influential economies.
Al Marri also highlighted the role of BRICS in promoting international dialogue and collaboration. “The world needs more dialogue and conversation, and the BRICS bring that as well,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of continuous engagement between nations. This perspective aligns with the UAE’s broader diplomatic approach, which prioritizes constructive conversations to address global challenges and enhance cooperation.
The UAE’s participation in BRICS is part of a broader economic strategy to diversify its partnerships and attract international investment. Since joining the BRICS New Development Bank in October 2021, the UAE has demonstrated its commitment to global development initiatives. The bank, established to fund infrastructure and sustainable development projects in BRICS and other developing nations, serves as a vital platform for advancing the UAE’s economic and development goals.
This membership also comes at a pivotal time for BRICS. Currently led by Russia, the alliance has expanded significantly, adding five new members in January 2024. With Brazil set to assume the presidency in 2025, the group continues to strengthen its influence on the global stage, offering a platform for emerging economies to shape international economic policies and foster collective growth.
The UAE’s inclusion in BRICS aligns with its vision of becoming a key player in the global economy. By forging stronger ties with emerging and established powers, the UAE is not only enhancing its own economic resilience but also contributing to a more interconnected and cooperative global economic landscape. This strategic move underscores the nation’s dedication to fostering growth, innovation, and sustainable development on an international scale.
