Asiatic Lion Population Rises 32% to 891 in India

India’s conservation success story continues as the Asiatic lion population has surged from 674 in 2020 to 891 in 2025 — a remarkable 32.2% increase. The lions, found exclusively in the Gir landscape of Gujarat, have benefited from decades of dedicated protection efforts, habitat expansion, and community participation. Experts attribute the growth to improved prey availability, effective monitoring, and the establishment of wildlife corridors connecting Gir with surrounding areas. This rise reaffirms India’s commitment to safeguarding its unique wildlife heritage and marks another milestone in the recovery of the once-endangered species.
