India’s First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Flagged Off by PM Modi | Howrah–Guwahati

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday flagged off India’s first-ever Vande Bharat Sleeper Train connecting Howrah in West Bengal with Guwahati (Kamakhya) in Assam, marking a historic milestone in the country’s railway modernization drive. The flag-off ceremony took place at Malda town railway station, while the Prime Minister also virtually inaugurated the Guwahati–Howrah Vande Bharat Sleeper service, symbolising seamless connectivity between eastern and northeastern India.

This landmark launch reflects the government’s focus on upgrading long-distance rail travel with world-class comfort, safety, and speed, while keeping fares affordable for the common citizen.

Airline-Like Comfort at Rail-Friendly Prices

The fully air-conditioned Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is designed to deliver an airline-like travel experience on rails, especially for overnight and long-distance journeys. With modern interiors, smooth acceleration, and reduced travel time, the train promises a comfortable and stress-free alternative to conventional long-haul rail services.

Despite its premium features, the fares remain economical. The approximate ticket prices are ₹2,300 for Third AC (with food), ₹3,000 for Second AC, and ₹3,600 for First AC, making it an attractive option across income groups.

Designed for Long-Distance Passengers

The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train consists of 16 state-of-the-art coaches with a total capacity of 823 passengers. It has been specifically designed to cater to long-distance travel needs, offering comfortable sleeper berths that allow passengers to rest properly during overnight journeys.

According to railway officials, the service will be particularly beneficial for students, professionals, migrant workers, traders, common passengers, and religious pilgrims, who frequently travel between West Bengal, Assam, and other northeastern states.

Semi-High-Speed with Advanced Technology

As a semi-high-speed train capable of running at speeds of up to 180 kmph, the Vande Bharat Sleeper significantly cuts down travel time while ensuring a smooth ride. It blends speed with cutting-edge technology to enhance both safety and passenger convenience.

Key safety features include the KAVACH automatic train protection system, fire detection and safety monitoring systems, and CCTV-based surveillance across coaches. These systems are aimed at preventing accidents, improving response times, and ensuring passenger security throughout the journey.
