Rekha Gupta Government Announces 100% Electric Buses for Delhi Within Three Years
In a major step towards sustainable urban mobility, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday announced that all public transport buses in the national capital will be converted to electric vehicles within the next three years. The announcement was made during the Republic Day celebrations held at Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi.
The decision marks one of the most ambitious clean transport initiatives undertaken by the city, aimed at reducing air pollution, cutting carbon emissions, and improving the overall quality of life for residents.
Addressing the gathering, CM Rekha Gupta said the transition to an emission-free bus fleet would help make Delhi cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally friendly.
11,000 Electric Buses Planned for Delhi
The Chief Minister revealed that the Delhi government has already completed arrangements to induct 11,000 electric buses into the city’s public transport system. These buses will replace existing diesel and CNG buses in a phased manner over the next three years.
She emphasised that the focus is not only on procuring electric buses but also on ensuring that the supporting ecosystem is fully prepared for the transition.
“This is a long-term transformation. We are building a system that will sustain clean public transport for decades,” she said.
Charging Stations and Bus Depots Under Rapid Development
To support the massive electric bus rollout, the Delhi government is simultaneously developing essential infrastructure across the city. According to the Chief Minister, the following facilities are being built at an accelerated pace:
-
New electric bus charging stations
-
Modern bus depots designed specifically for electric fleets
-
Maintenance and servicing facilities for electric buses
“These steps are being taken so that Delhi can fully shift to clean public transport in the coming years,” CM Rekha Gupta said, as quoted by ANI.
The government aims to ensure that charging and maintenance do not disrupt daily bus operations and that commuters continue to receive reliable service.
Capital Expenditure Doubled to ₹30,000 Crore
Highlighting the government’s development push, CM Rekha Gupta announced that Delhi’s capital expenditure has been doubled to ₹30,000 crore. The increased spending will support infrastructure projects across sectors, including transport, health, and urban development.
She said the enhanced capital outlay reflects the government’s commitment to long-term growth rather than short-term measures.
“Strong infrastructure is the backbone of a developed city. We are investing today to secure Delhi’s future,” she said.
How Electric Buses Will Transform Delhi’s Commute
The Chief Minister stressed that electric buses would play a crucial role in tackling Delhi’s long-standing pollution challenges. Zero-emission buses are expected to significantly reduce vehicular pollution, one of the biggest contributors to poor air quality in the capital.
Electric buses also offer quieter rides, lower operating costs, and improved passenger comfort. With better buses and upgraded infrastructure, the government aims to provide citizens with a safer, cleaner, and more comfortable travel experience.
Officials believe that the move will also encourage more people to shift from private vehicles to public transport, further easing traffic congestion.
Ayushman Bharat Implemented on Day One
Alongside transport reforms, CM Rekha Gupta also highlighted the government’s focus on healthcare welfare. She said that Ayushman Bharat, one of the world’s largest health insurance schemes, was implemented in Delhi on the very first day of the BJP government’s formation.
According to her, 6.5 lakh people have already registered under the scheme in a short period of time.
Ayushman Bharat provides health insurance coverage of up to ₹10 lakh to eligible beneficiaries, ensuring access to quality healthcare for economically weaker sections.
“This scheme is meant to support the poor and needy and ensure that no one is denied healthcare,” the Chief Minister said.
