India–UAE Naval Cooperation Enters a Strategic New Phase
Strengthening Defence Ties Through High-Level Military Diplomacy
The recent meeting between Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, India’s Chief of Naval Staff, and Matar Salem Ali Al Dhaheri marks a pivotal moment in India–UAE defence relations. In an era defined by shifting maritime power balances, both nations appear determined to elevate their security partnership. Their dialogue—focused on interoperability, capacity building, and defence-industry collaboration—signals not just routine diplomacy but a shared intent to shape a more stable regional maritime order.
Deepening Naval-to-Naval Engagements
During his official visit, Adm. Tripathi also met Saeed Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, Commander of the UAE Naval Forces, reinforcing the growing synergy between the two navies. Their discussions on training, joint operations, and maritime domain awareness reflect a mutual understanding: the Indian Ocean Region and the Gulf are strategically interlinked, and coordinated naval engagement is essential to securing these waters. In my view, this growing naval alignment is not merely symbolic—it is a strategic necessity.

BILAT Exercise: A Powerful Signal of Trust and Technological Confidence
A central highlight of the visit is India’s participation in the third edition of the India–UAE Bilateral Naval Exercise (BILAT). The deployment of the indigenously built INS Visakhapatnam demonstrates India’s confidence in showcasing its advanced naval capabilities. Such engagements not only enhance tactical coordination but also strengthen strategic trust—an indispensable factor in contemporary defence partnerships.
Adm. Tripathi’s interactions at operational units, command centres, and the National Defence College underline India’s commitment to a long-term, institutionalised naval partnership with the UAE. The visit, in essence, reflects a shared vision for secure, rules-based maritime cooperation in a region critical to global trade and energy flows.
