Youth-Led "Cockroach" Movement Draws Nationwide Attention Amid Education Reform Protests

Thousands of demonstrators gathered in New Delhi and several other Indian cities this week as the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) movement expanded from an online campaign into one of the country's largest recent student-led protest movements. Protesters are calling for reforms to India's examination system, greater accountability over repeated examination paper leaks, and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The movement began after a remark comparing some unemployed young people to "cockroaches" gained widespread attention. Many students adopted the term as a symbol of resilience, organizing under the satirical name "Cockroach Janta Party." Public frustration intensified following controversies surrounding examination paper leaks, particularly affecting the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), which has become a focal point of the protests.

Demonstrations and Police Response

The largest demonstration took place on 20 July, coinciding with the opening of Parliament's Monsoon Session. Protesters assembled at Delhi's Jantar Mantar before attempting to march toward Parliament.

Authorities deployed a significant security presence, citing public safety concerns. Reports from multiple news organizations stated that police used barricades, baton charges, and tear gas after protesters attempted to move beyond restricted areas. Several injuries were reported, though official and independent accounts differ regarding the sequence of events and responsibility for the violence.

Environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been participating in a hunger strike supporting students' demands, became a prominent figure in the movement after being removed from the protest site by authorities prior to the march.

Broader Significance

While the protests initially focused on examination integrity, the movement has broadened to include concerns about youth unemployment, educational opportunities, institutional accountability, and governance. Social media has played a central role in organizing demonstrations and spreading information, allowing the movement to attract supporters across multiple states.

Government officials have stated that reforms are being pursued in response to examination irregularities and have defended security measures taken during the demonstrations. Protest organizers, however, maintain that further institutional reforms and greater accountability are necessary.

As of late July 2026, demonstrations continue in parts of India, with organizers indicating that additional protests may be held if their demands remain unmet.
